Insulation Brick

Insulation brick is a kind of brick with high porosity, low density, having thermal insulation and heat preservation. Because insulation brick is very light, it also be called light weight brick. In addition to being used to prevent heat outflow losses at temperature higher than ambient temperature, insulation bricks are also used to prevent heat inflow at temperature lower than ambient temperature.

Insulation brick is classified and named the most commonly according to the chemical mineral composition of the material or the raw material for production, such as the insulation brick using raw materials of fireclay, siliceous or high aluminum bauxite are known as fireclay insulation brick, silicon insulation brick or high aluminum insulation brick.

The insulation bricks are classified into three categories according to the service temperature:

1. Low temperature insulation brick, used at low temperature less than 600℃;

2. Medium temperature insulation brick, used at medium temperature between 600~1200℃;

3. High temperature insulation brick, use at greater degree than 1200℃.

Compared with ordinary dense refractory brick, the most significant structural characteristics of insulation brick are high porosity and large pore diameter. In the most refractory brick sintered fully, the porosity is generally less than 20% and the pore diameter is small. And the porosity of all sorts of insulation refractory brick is above 45% commonly, and the aperture of porosity is big.

The primary function of the porosity of insulaton refractory brick is to reduce the thermal conductivity because the thermal conductivity of gas is lower than that of any other solid. In most cases, the porosity in the insulation refractory brick play actually the role of insulation.

In the aspect of bulk density, the bulk density of light insulation brick is no more than 1.3 g/cm³ commonly. The bulk density of light insulation brick used commonly is 0.6~1.0 g/cm³. the insulation brick with bulk density of 0.3~0.4g/cm³ or lower was called super light insulation brick.

Volume density is one of the main indexes of thermal insulation brick. It has a direct relationship with the heat capacity and thermal conductivity of the product. The larger the volume density of the product, the higher the heat capacity and thermal conductivity. However, too little volume density will increase the thermal conductivity of the product. Therefore, from the perspective of heat insulation and energy saving, the volume density of the product should be controlled in a appropriate range.
